Strengthening Marriages and Families

Please mail to: Light of the World, 28 Sparrowbush Road, Latham NY

Embracing Judeo-Christian values, we share a common concern regarding marriage.

We, the undersigned, believe:

  • That God has established the sanctity and covenant of marriage between a man and a woman.

  • That God intends the marriage bond to last a lifetime.

  • That chastity before marriage is the ideal, and fidelity in marriage is vital to the health of every marital relationship.

  • That as congregational leaders we have a critical role and responsibility in providing adequate premarital preparation as well as ongoing support for existing marriages.

We are therefore committed to:

    1. PROVIDING A FOUNDATION FOR PREMARITAL PREPARATION

    • Promote pre-engagement training.

    • Expect a minimum of four months premarital preparation by clergy and mentor couples.

    • Provide a minimum of six premarital mentoring sessions with trained mentor couples, utilizing the Scriptures, a premarital inventory, and other appropriate resources to prepare couples for a lifetime of marriage.

    2. PROMOTING MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT AND RESTORATION

    • Actively promote marriage enrichment events and resources in our churches and communities.

    • Cooperate with other congregations and organizations to share family resources for the purpose of helping all marriages succeed.

    • Utilize existing ministries or develop new ministries designed to build and strengthen marriages (Examples: Marriage Encounter, Family Life Conferences, etc.).

    • Initiate programs with a proven potential to restore troubled marriages and stepfamilies to be successful, such as Retrouvaille, Marriage Ministry, and Stepfamily Support Groups.

    3. DEVELOPING LEADERS AND MENTORS

    • Identify and train mature married couples, who have weathered storms in their own marriage to serve as mentors for:

      • who are engaged,

      • Newlyweds,

      • Married couples experiencing marital difficulties,

      • Married couples seeking marriage enrichment.
